Waterloo Named Among Best Midwest Cities for Retired Couples

Ranking Targets Those Living Primarily on Social Security 
WATERLOO, IA – This week, Waterloo, Iowa was named as the sixth best Midwest city for retired couples living on social security. The top ten cities were released by GOBankingRates, a personal finance company. Of those identified, Iowa took five spots followed by North Dakota and Wisconsin with two each and Kansas with one. 
GOBanking Rates looked at the average rent in 2023 for a one-bedroom apartment through data collected from the Bureau of Labor Statistics 2020 Consumer Expenditure Survey, ApartmentList and Sperling’s Best cost-of-living index.    

According to the findings, “Waterloo has the lowest rent on the list, at just $740, and a high livability score. Transportation is also affordable, at just $264.86 per month, or 35.7% lower than the national average.” 

Waterloo, Iowa has a livability score of 81, according to AreaVibes. The score is determined using a unique algorithm that takes into account multiple characteristics in nine categories including nearby amenities, commute, cost of living, crime rates, employment, health and safety, schools, housing and user ratings. The Livability Score is then calculated out of 100 for city, neighborhood or address.
