New Communications Director Announced

The City of Waterloo is announcing Tara Thomas Gettman as the new Director of Strategic Communications, effective April 1, 2023. The professional and administrative staff position is responsible for managing and coordinating all strategic communications, marketing, and branding efforts for the City—including economic development activities and other special projects. The role works to enhance the image and reputation of the City.

TaraThe former KWWL-TV news anchor has extensive experience in brand promotion and community engagement. In addition to being a local broadcast journalist for over a decade, Thomas Gettman was the Director of School and Community Relations for Waterloo Schools for eight years. Most recently, she has been the Executive Director of Communications for a technology adoption firm.

“Tara has over 20 years of experience engaging with our community as a journalist, communications lead and volunteer. She believes in Waterloo, so much so, this is where she chooses to live and raise her family. We are excited to leverage her skill set to tell all the good news happening in our great city,” said Quentin Hart, Mayor of Waterloo.

Thomas Gettman has a master’s degree in strategic communication from the University of Iowa and a bachelor of science degree in journalism with a minor in political science from Boston University in Massachusetts.
