Downtown Waterloo Sidewalk Sale and Art Walk

Downtown Waterloo is bringing together small businesses, locally-owned restaurants, and art for a special Spring Sidewalk Sale and Art Walk on Friday, May 14th and Saturday, May 15th. Come browse the downtown area, chat with merchants and enjoy interactive and displayed artwork. Downtown businesses will be offering unbeatable bargains on clothing, jewelry, housewares, cards and more!

musicalmasterpieces-06In partnership with Waterloo Center for the Arts, Musical Masterpieces interactive art display will launch on Saturday, May 15th.  Over the past year, the Waterloo Center for the arts has been collecting pianos and soliciting artists to transform them from mere musical instruments to whimsical works of art. Individuals generously donated pianos which serve as the canvases for the project and talented artists enthusiastically shared their time and talents. The artists range in age from teenagers to retired community members, students to professionals. The pianos will be placed on sidewalks throughout downtown Waterloo, bringing art and music into the streets. It is our hope that visitors passing by will enjoy them, and perhaps even stop to play, casually tickling the ivories or presenting impromptu open-air concerts. Waterloo Center for the Arts Director, Kent Shankle shared, “Waterloo is working on a number of exciting projects to enhance our downtown through public art. We’re pleased to kick these efforts off with this project which showcased the talents of local artists. We love the idea of people encountering something wonderful and unexpected as they stroll the streets of downtown and we are looking forward to seeing (and hearing) people interacting with the art in public spaces.”

2021 Arts at the Amphitheatre PosterMain Street Waterloo has also partnered with East High School as part of their Arts at the Amphitheater fundraising event on Saturday, May 15th from 2-5PM at the RiverLoop Amphitheatre. While shopping downtown, browse and bid on student artwork then stop by the Amphitheatre to enjoy an afternoon of music from the EHS band, jazz band, chorus and orchestra in their only live performance of the year.  Funds raised will benefit the art department trips in 2022. Donavan Oberheu, Art Teacher East High School said, “Our Arts at the Amphitheatre event is always a highlight of the end of the school year, so it was a obviously a sad thing to have to cancel last year due to the pandemic. We were very grateful to be able to bring it back again this year, and when Main Street Waterloo reached out to us about coming together for an event downtown we were incredibly excited about the opportunity, as it’s definitely a perfect partnership for us. Expanding our concert and student art auction to be included with everything they have going on Friday and Saturday will be a great way to bring people from throughout the Cedar Valley over to the Amphitheatre for our event, and hopefully it will encourage those from our school community that are coming out to celebrate our student’s musical and artistic talents to venture out into the rest of downtown and see what all the shops and businesses have to offer. It’s great for everyone involved, and another great free event for the public to enjoy!”
