Broadband

In 2019, the Waterloo City Council allocated funds to complete a feasibility study on developing a municipal broadband network throughout Waterloo.   The goal is to develop a Fiber Backbone to support City municipal operations, including utility operations, traffic, public  safety and future Smart City initiatives. The plan is to also help deliver next-generation Fiver to the Premise/Home services enabling high -speed access to every home and business throughout Waterloo

The Council will be looking into funding options including, ARPA funding, partnerships with neighboring municipalities and leverage additional funding opportunities, including potential EDA awards and upcoming infrastructure funding programs. 


Time frame of the Fiber Backbone Project:

  • In January 2020, the city hired Magellan Advisors to conduct a broadband study 
  • In February 2021, a draft of the study was presented to the city council and the Telecommunications Utility board of trustees 
  • In April 2021, the Fiber broadband design started
  • In August 2021, the Fiber FTTP design started
  • In March of 2022, residents and business were surveyed and information was collectedSurvey Resluts
  • In June 2022, present to the Waterloo City Council the Broadband Assessment and Feasibility Analysis
  • August 2022 Finalize Design
  • August 2022 Procurement of Construction and Materials
  • January 2023- Procurement of Project Components
  • January 2023 Finalize Agreements for Services
