Civic Rights Project

With the assistant of an African American Civil Rights Grant from the National park Service, the Waterloo Historical Commission began working with Thomas Zahn and Associates on a civil rights history marker project in 2018. In the summer of 2023, the final study was presented and approved by the Waterloo Historical Commission.

The following seven proposed properties will display signs in the right-of-way to mark and explain the significance of each location as it relates to Waterloo’s civil rights history. Click on each marker to read it's Iowa Site Inventory form form the State Historic Preservation Office.
