Geographic Information Systems

The City of Waterloo geographic information system (GIS) is a computer based tool for gathering, managing, and analyzing geographically referenced data.  Rooted in the science of geography, GIS integrates many types of data.  It analyzes spatial location and organizes layers of information into visualizations using maps and 3D scenes.  With this unique capability, GIS reveals deeper insights into data, such as patterns, relationships, and situations - helping users make smarter decisions.

Sidewalk Repair
In 2021, the City of Waterloo began working with GIS partner Pro-West & Associates and created a GIS based application that lets city staff in the field record the sidewalks they are inspecting.  This new system has increased the accuracy, efficiency and eliminated opportunities for human error for the city of Waterloo staff.  You can read more about this program and case study here.
